Forensic Odontology refers to the use of Odontologist’s
expertise in tracing crime associated clues and details with the use of
Odontology. Mostly people who are involved in this type of job are highly experienced
dentist that opted to try a higher degree of their expertise by helping in
solving crimes and cases. The presence of Odontologist in a crime scene
investigation is really important specially when there is a problem in
clarification of identity, bite marks, dental evidences and dental associated
crimes.
They picked even the smallest possible clue and examine
everything carefully to provide important facts that may help in solving a
mystery. But unlike other expertise on the team of forensic experts,
Odontologist have fewer assignments to take, they are usually assigned on
isolated cases where crimes were unsolved due to scarcity of evidences and
identity of suspects. Whenever a crime happens in a severe manner, where
victims are burned, or thrown into other places, the tendency of identifying them is really
poor , thus this is the time where odontologist takes over and do appropriate
examination to reveal true identity through their dental records. Professional odontologists
are mostly hired through recommendation and popularity where government sectors
check their expertise through background checking and professional
associations. This is to support the fact that not all dentist, or odontologist
has the ability to perform required expertise in forensic investigation a
reason why they are chosen carefully and weighed in accordingly on how
effective and helpful they can be on the forensic team.
Forensic Odontology is not limited to crime related tasks,
most of them are assigned on the FBI together with the DNA testing department, actually they play a relevant
task since they are all related on revealing identities and investigating
decade bodies which other people needs clarification on their true identity not
necessarily crime related but most of it. The use of dental records on
revealing identity is not new today which in a way also odontologist has the
ability to run examinations and reveal the exact age through dental remains. We
all know that unlike the skeleton and other body remains, the teeth is the one
that stays in place, undamaged and can be examined without getting destroyed,
a fact that supports how accurate ondontology results are. Dental evidences can
be recovered even from a long period of time; they can be traceable and remains
beneficial in providing facts.
